IT'S taken 43 years of hurt. But Calderdale's football playing doctors have finally brought the World Cup home.
Arif Kazi, a GP at Station Road Surgery, Sowerby Bridge, and Ripponden GP Adrian O'Donovan were part of the winning British team who clinched gold in the Medical World Cup in South Korea last week.
The team knocked out Lithuania, South Korea and Spain, before beating Brazil 1-0 in the final at the 70,000 seat Jamsil Olympic stadium in Seoul, venue of the 1988 Olympic Games.
Dr Kazi, 42 and founder of the team, said: "We have all been on cloud nine ever since.
"To beat Brazil in the final in such an amazing stadium was incredibly exciting and a dream come true.
"We have been playing in the competition for four years and we have never won.
"We went crazy at the final whistle."
Dr O'Donovan, 32, of Rishworth, said: "We are all delighted. It was an amazing trip and we are very proud to have won it."
The cup is currently in Blackburn but is being taken on a tour of the country and will arrive in Calderdale within the next fortnight.
The British Medical Football Team hold trials every year with last year's taking place at Park Lane High School, Halifax.
